Topeka Forklift Parts - Topeka is a city in the central state of Kansas. It is the county seat of Shawnee County and the state capital. Situated on the Kansas River in the northeast part of Kansas State, the city of Topeka has a population of 127,473. The Topeka Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of approximately 230,800. Other counties in the metro area are Jackson, Jefferson, Wabaunsee, Shawnee and Osage.

The city was the location of the landmark legal Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, where it was declared that it was unconstitutional to declare racial segregation in public schools. Three Navy ships have been named after Topeka in order to remember its importance.

The word Topeka in the language of the Kansa and the Loway means "to dig good potatoes." The prairie potato was an important food source for the Native Americans who occupied the region. The Kansa people referred to what is now called the Kansas River as "Topeka." The name was originally recorded during the year 1826, but the settlement was not referred to as Topeka until 1855 when the founders declared it "novel, of Indian origin and euphonious of sound." Joseph James (also referred to as Jojim) was a mixed-blood Kansa Indian who thought of the name. Topeka was a Free-State township founded by Eastern antislavery men following the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill. Topeka was chartered as a city during the year 1857.

More than 50% of Topeka's economy is based on services and government. City, county and state governments employ approximately 25 percent of the workforce. Topeka's biggest employer is Kansas. 30 per cent of the labor force is employed in services industries. Many are working in printing and publishing, food processing, iron foundries and flour mills. There are a number of Fortune 500 companies with distribution or manufacturing facilities within Topeka. Well-known companies include Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Frito-Lay Inc., Hallmark Cards, Payless Shoe Source and Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway.

The city of Topeka boasts various fine art galleries with important selections of art, like for example the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University. A little known fact about Topeka is that it is the home of the logo character for Mad Magazine, the character Alfred E. Neuman.
